Nidan and Higher Ranks
The following essay is presented to newly ranked black belts by Sensei Philip
Rasmussen. Read it carefully as it discusses some of the philosophical responsibilities of black belts.

On Being A Black Belt
Through hard work and ceaseless dedication you have developed your mind, body, and spirit to encompass the tenets of jujitsu. You have also perceived the philosophy of jujitsu: the development of self for the betterment of society. You have now entered the realm of Bushido.
Bushido is that learning which covers all aspects of human life. Its vastness is incomprehensible. It is without form or shape and cannot be easily understood. Heaven and earth cannot contain it, words cannot describe it. To grasp Bushido, look beyond illusion, clarify heaven and earth, look at things as they are, examine your heart, and realize no-self. There is no need to search elsewhere. Put into practice those virtues which are good and you will observe the essence of Bushido. Engage in activities that serve. Desire not fame and wealth but rather enlightenment. Bushido nurtures initiative, compassion, trust, loyalty, honor, love, humility, and other virtues that can never be legislated. It is the true law of the spirit.
You have practiced the methods of our Way. This is admirable and is a fine example of supreme effort. Out of many, you have extracted the principle of mind, body, and spirit. You have grasped the real dimensions of Bushido, and are advanced sufficiently to receive your certificate. Your entreaties have been sincere, your pledges sound, and your petitions granted. Even though you have achieved Shodan ranking, do not neglect the traditions of jujitsu and Bushido. Practice
Zensho, the art of living completely. Your belt symbolizes the unity of spirit with others and proclaims your level of achievement. You are at the beginning of a journey. Climb the treasure mountain and do not return empty-handed. Guard your treasure carefully!

Higher Rank Charts
The techniques learned for Shodan provide students with basic jujitsu knowledge and application. The higher ranks, Nidan and above, require students to perform at a higher level that integrates previously learned techniques into smooth flowing defenses. In addition, these higher ranks require additional techniques, knowledge in kata (forms), teaching, first aid, defenses from various positions, and more in-depth study of jujitsu and the martial arts to name a few.
The techniques to be learned are more specific than in the kyu and Shodan ranks. Time in grade at each rank is also longer, allowing the student to become more proficient and to learn the required
information.
The following chart and outlines summarize the higher level ranks. They should be used as a guide for instructors and students. Specific techniques have not been identified. It is the responsibility of the instructor to select the appropriate techniques for these ranks.
