About the USJA Jujitsu Manual.

One of the first questions often is: Exactly what from the USJA JJ manual needs to be taught?

Let's remember that the objective of the manual is not to "Lay down the Law" as to WHICH technique would be taught in each segment, but rather to provide a sample manual of a minimal quantity of representative techniques as defenses against representative attacks.

The USJA recognizes that many different styles of Jujitsu are covered within its ranks, and no one single style could actually mirror the techniques depicted in the manual, but many would be similar to those taught in your dojo. However, ALL would be based on Jujitsu principles.

The objective is to provide a format, that can include or exclude any-and- all the techniques shown, but as a whole, would define the body of work that a specific JJ style MIGHT exhibit.

The best way to describe that what should be taught, is a numeric GROUP of defenses within each specific category, that would resemble or emulate the body of work shown in the manual.

So, it is entirely possible - but unlikely - that ALL the techniques shown in the manual would be different from the style and techniques taught by each different sensei. BUT, the sum total body of work would encompass what the USJA expects the MINIMUM to be at each rank and at each level.
Clearly, many sensei ask much more from their ranks, at each level, but none should expect less!

So, if you feel a certain response to an attack is more effective in your style, then THAT is what you substitute in the numerical total. If you feel that a depicted technique is useful, than you ADD that to your curriculum, or may even substitute it. If not, stick with what works for YOU.

In time, and after reviewing all the different responses from different sensei, you may find that the technique you have taught for many years, actually has a better response.
